Why does azazel want sam

The rush of demons from the gate destroys the Devil's Trap so that Azazel can enter. When the iron lines are broken, he appears behind Dean and is about to be shot with the Colt, but telekinetically grabs it and forcefully throws Dean onto the ground, telling him how thankful he is to Dean that he revived Sam since he liked him better than Jake.

He then aims the Colt at Dean, preparing to kill him, but John's ghost appears behind and grabs him from behind, pulling him out of his human host. Azazel escapes from John's grasp and returns to his body, but Dean already has the Colt and shoots him in the chest, killing him. Dean then triumphantly stands over the demon's "body", recognizing his and Sam's victory over the thing which has given their family so much death and heartache.

However, with the release of hundreds of demons, the Winchester brothers accept the fact that they have more work to do and more demons to hunt down and kill, possibly worse than Azazel. Some months later Dean finally learns the Yellow Eyed Demon's true name, Azazel, from the demon Casey , who describes him as a tyrant that held all the other demons together.

She also tells Dean that in the wake of Azazel's death, the demons who escaped the Devil's Gate are divided over who should lead them. Originally Sam , Azazel's favorite, was supposed to lead them, but hadn't "stepped up to the plate. The angel Castiel sends Dean back in time to see the circumstances of how Mary Winchester and Azazel met in , and Dean's own actions are what caused his own mother's death by telling Azazel of Sam.

When Castiel returns Dean to the present, he states that the angels are aware of what Azazel did to Sam but don't know why and used the event as a means to get Dean to stop Sam developing his psychic powers any further. Months later, Azazel appears as one of Dean 's hallucinations while he's inflicted with Ghost Sickness. Dean hallucinates that Azazel is possessing Sam. Later when Dean is talking to Sam after being cured, for a slight minute, he sees Sam's eyes glow yellow in a slight hallucination , implying that even though dead, Dean still secretly fears Azazel.

After hunting Bobby and Dean lock Sam inside Bobby's panic room so he can detox from the demon blood, Sam starts to hallucinate.

When he sees his younger self, he starts a conversation with him until his younger self's eyes flash into Azazel's eyes. Whilst trying to track down Lilith, Sam and Ruby learned of Azazel's slaughter of the nuns in and discovered that the convent is where Lilith was going to break the last seal to free Lucifer. When Sam finally kills Lilith and frees Lucifer, Ruby tells Sam that everything Azazel ever planned was to get him to that point, same with Lilith.

During the final stages of the apocalypse, it is revealed by Brady , an old friend of Sam's in college, that Azazel had a demon posses Brady who introduced Sam to Jess. It is also revealed that it was actually Brady who killed Jess rather than Azazel but on Azazel's instructions.

In Swan Song , when Lucifer finally possesses Sam he waits for the arrival of Michael with a team of demons, but all of whom are people Sam has befriended or been fond of in the past, Lucifer reveals that Azazel had them all possessed even when he was a toddler.

During Exile on Main Street , lingering fear and hatred of Azazel was revealed to continue to haunt Dean, when Dean was poisoned by a djinn. Dean's hallucination of Azazel claimed that he was resurrected by God like Castiel had. He mocked a shocked Dean about thinking he could leave hunting to live with Lisa and Ben Braeden , then tried to strangle him. This apparition of Azazel dissipated when Sam intervened and administered an antidote to Dean to cure him of the djinn's poison.

Dean was later given a double dose of djinn poison; his hallucination involved Azazel murdering Lisa in the same fashion as his mother and convincing Ben to drink his blood as Ruby did to Sam, with Azazel repeatedly telling Dean that it's all his fault and he can't stop it.

This hallucination ended when Dean received more antidote to the djinn poison. In As Time Goes By , while angrily confronting his grandfather , Dean tells him that John lost his wife to a demon before subsequently being killed by one himself.

In Goodbye Stranger , it is revealed that Azazel is one of the few demons who were entrusted with the knowledge of the location of Lucifer's Crypts and its contents, due to his high-ranking status and closeness to his father. At an unspecified point, over a hundred years before he visited them, and took his servant, and demon daughter Meg with him. Meg thus also knew their location, which in garnered the interest of Crowley , who was looking for them.

In Fan Fiction , Marie 's stage play of Supernatural involved a student dressed as Azazel in a full black suit and mask, the only definitive part of him being his yellow eyes. In the play Azazel's imitator reenacts the murder of Mary and poisoning of Sam. Dean later tells her that John died trading himself for Dean to a demon though he doesn't name Azazel when he tells her this. In Stuck in the Middle With You , Azazel is revealed to have been a Prince of Hell , the first generation of demons after Lilith , a generation turned by Lucifer himself and trained to be generals of the demon armies.

In a flashback to after Lucifer's defeat in , Crowley visits Ramiel , who calls Azazel "a fanatic" and states that the other Princes of Hell had long stopped caring about Lucifer's plan while Azazel never had.

Mary is surprised that Toni knows the details of her deal with Azazel. In All Along the Watchtower , the Winchesters and Castiel visit a post-apocalyptic alternate reality where Bobby Singer reveals that an alternate Azazel had killed John but never revived him, resulting in that world.

He also killed Mary thirty years later, likely during a hunt. Bobby reveals that Mary had refused the deal with her Azazel , causing the alternate Mary to live a life of regret. Mary realizes that as a result, Sam and Dean never existed to stop the Apocalypse and reveals to Bobby that in her world, she made the deal with Azazel. Bobby reassures Mary that given the outcome of her refusing it in Apocalypse World, Mary made the right choice.

In Lebanon , after John Winchester is pulled from by the Baozhu , Sam and Dean tell him about everything that has happened, including the death of Azazel and John's role in it. John is pleased to have gotten his revenge upon Azazel for Mary's murder, stating that getting revenge was what it had all been about for him. John later tells Dean that he had intended for it all to end once he had gotten his revenge and hoped that afterwards, Dean would be able to go and lead a normal life.

After Sam destroys the Baozhu and returns John to , he forgets the future and all that he learned from Sam and Dean about Azazel and his plans, believing it to only be a great dream.

Azazel took pleasure in inflicting pain whether psychological or physical onto others. Having a sadistic sense of humor, he liked to play with his victims' emotions by convincing them that their worst fears were true before he killed them.

It was even kind of fun. I just stopped fighting it. Azazel explains during the episode that he needs one soldier; the best of the best, and someone with leadership skills. This is a competition. Only one of you crazy kids is gonna make it out of here alive. You are. I need soldier. I just need the one. I had to let everyone think they had a fighting chance. But what I need I mean, why do you think so many children flamed out already?

This plan was already known by the demons, but Azazel's death in All Hell Breaks Loose Part II leaves a gap in the leadership of the newly released demon army. From Sin City. DEAN: So, the gate opened. The demon army was let out. What now, huh? I'm not seeing a big, honking plan here. He had a name. After you did him in, it all fell apart. It was Sam. Sam was supposed to be the grand pooh-bah and lead the big army, but You think this is a good thing?

Now you've got chaos, a war without a front, hundreds of demons all jockeying for power, all fighting for the crown. Most of them gunning for your brother. For the record, I was ready to follow Sam. And later , we find that Lilith has taken control of the demon army. Sam and Dean were genetically engineered by Heaven to be the vessels. I believe the fact that Sam was part of Azazel's plan was more of a coincidence.

Cas even says he knows what he did to Sam, but not why. I think it was more that Azazel was trying to make a power play and ended up failing when he inadvertently got in the way of the Winchester brothers. Really that whole plot gave us two things: the beginning of the show and the reason why John got into hunting, and Sam's psychic abilities now whether those were always "in" him and just heightened by demon blood or simply because of it I'm not sure.

If Azazel was just trying to create a vessel for Lucifer, Sam wouldn't have been nearly as important. It needed to be the blood line of Mary and John, not the psychic stuff also a note since Dean obviously did not need any outside force to be a vessel.

Azazel found Mary Campbell and killed her parents along with her boyfriend John Winchester. Azazel made a deal with her that he resurrect John if she let him enter house in ten years. She complied and the deal was made. Before the events of the Pilot , Azazel snuck into the Winchester's home to feed Sam Winchester demon blood. This was due to the deal Mary made with Azazel ten years prior to bring her then boyfriend, John Winchester , back to life. However, Mary walked in on Azazel feeding Sam his blood and tried to stop him, but Azazel telekinetically pinned her to the ceiling and burned her alive.

John walked in just in time to save Sam, but was too late to see who or what killed Mary. Much later, the Special Children would gain several demonic powers as they aged. Some were ostracized for their powers, with some using theirs to get revenge on those who wrong them. Azazel went on to hold the Special Children Competition , bringing many of the Special Children to him and having them fight to the death. Many of the Special Children used their abilities in the fights and most were killed, with Jake Talley being the sole survivor after he killed Sam and Azazel tasked Jake with using the Colt and open the Devil's Gate.

The Winchesters gathered allies to stop Jake, but he succeeded in opening the gate, though not before he lost his life to Sam. The creator of the Special Children, Azazel, would lose his own life at Dean's hand, but his mission was completed and Lilith was freed. Sam was the only Special Child left and he was also destined to be the true vessel of Lucifer. After Lilith killed Dean, she sent her servant Ruby to pretend to side with Sam and get him addicted to demon blood to teach him to master his powers so he could host Lucifer.

Dean was sent back in time where he confronted Azazel who revealed the true reason for creating the Special Children was for a bigger goal. After Sam killed Lilith, Ruby revealed that Lucifer would reward him in many ways, before she was also killed. Lucifer later made contact with Sam, telling him that he was always the one to be possessed.
