The flagella beat in a propeller-like motion to help the bacterium move toward nutrients; away from toxic chemicals; or, in the case of the photosynthetic cyanobacteria; toward the light.

Nucleoid - The nucleoid is a region of cytoplasm where the chromosomal DNA is located. It is not a membrane bound nucleus, but simply an area of the cytoplasm where the strands of DNA are found. Most bacteria have a single, circular chromosome that is responsible for replication, although a few species do have two or more. Smaller circular auxiliary DNA strands, called plasmids, are also found in the cytoplasm. Pili - Many species of bacteria have pili singular, pilus , small hairlike projections emerging from the outside cell surface.

These outgrowths assist the bacteria in attaching to other cells and surfaces, such as teeth, intestines, and rocks. Without pili, many disease-causing bacteria lose their ability to infect because they're unable to attach to host tissue. Specialized pili are used for conjugation, during which two bacteria exchange fragments of plasmid DNA.

Ribosomes - Ribosomes are microscopic "factories" found in all cells, including bacteria. Proteins are the molecules that perform all the functions of cells and living organisms. Bacterial ribosomes are similar to those of eukaryotes, but are smaller and have a slightly different composition and molecular structure. Bacterial ribosomes are never bound to other organelles as they sometimes are bound to the endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotes, but are free-standing structures distributed throughout the cytoplasm.

There are sufficient differences between bacterial ribosomes and eukaryotic ribosomes that some antibiotics will inhibit the functioning of bacterial ribosomes, but not a eukaryote's, thus killing bacteria but not the eukaryotic organisms they are infecting. Bacteria Cell Structure They are as unrelated to human beings as living things can be, but bacteria are essential to human life and life on planet Earth.

Send us an email. Many bacteria are beneficial to humans. We harness their power to curdle milk into yogurt and ferment cabbage into kimchi.

Some species even do their work inside us. According to the Microbiology Society, there are about 10 times as many bacterial cells as human cells inside a person's body, and many of these live in the digestive tract. These bacteria get a constant stream of nutrients from the human gut. In return, they help break down foods that human digestive enzymes can't. Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron , for example, helps break down complex carbohydrates. Bacteria on the skin can also produce byproducts that keep harmful bacteria away, according to a paper in the journal Nature Reviews Microbiology.

The benign bacterium Corynebacterium accolens , for example, inhibits the growth of the pneumonia-causing S. Some skin bacteria can be both helpful and harmful. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a spherical bacterium that commonly colonizes the skin but can cause infection if it gets inside the human body.

However, S. Some bacteria, like S. But when these bacteria find their way into the body, especially in people who are immunocompromised , they can cause fatal infections.

Staph infections can cause sepsis full-body inflammation in response to infection , pneumonia , endocarditis inflammation of the heart and heart valves and osteomyelitis inflammation of the bone , according to the CDC. Other bacteria are almost always harmful to humans. Cholera, a diarrheal disease that kills about 95, people worldwide each year, is caused by V. The bacterium Yersinia pestis , spread by fleas that bite rodents, was responsible for the Black Death.

And Bacillus anthracis can form almost indestructible anthrax spores that lurk in soil and can cause deadly disease if inhaled or consumed. Some of the most common problematic bacteria infect people through spoiled food. Salmonella bacteria cause an illness called salmonellosis, marked by diarrhea, stomach cramping and fever. Though most people recover after four to seven days, salmonellosis can be serious, and even fatal, in both young children and older people, according to the CDC.

While many strains live harmlessly in human intestines, others cause diarrheal illness. Like salmonellosis, E. Another common bacterium that can be harmful to people is Helicobacter pylori.

About half of people carry these bacteria in their stomachs, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most people never show any ill effects of this infection, but in some cases, the bacteria cause peptic ulcers , or painful sores in the lining of the stomach. It's not entirely clear how the bacteria spread, but risk factors include crowded livi. Bacterial vaginosis is a condition in which anaerobic bacteria bacteria that do not use oxygen in their metabolism overtake Lactobacillus , a type of beneficial bacteria, in the vagina.

Symptoms include vaginal itching, gray or green discharge, a fishy odor and pain during urination, according to the Mayo Clinic. It's not clear what causes bacterial vaginosis, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some people are likely susceptible because their vaginal environment is not as comfortable for the Lactobacillus bacteria that make up a healthy vaginal microflora.

Douching or having sex with a new partner or with multiple sexual partners can be a risk factor, possibly because these activities disrupt the usual bacterial communities in the vagina. Bacteria commonly associated with bacterial vaginosis include Gardnerella vaginalis , Prevotella species, Mobiluncus species and Atopobium vaginae , according to the CDC. If untreated, bacterial vaginosis is a risk factor for preterm birth and can make a person more susceptible to contracting sexually transmitted infections.

Bacterial vaginosis can be treated with antibiotics. Sterilization techniques and antibiotic medications have led to a significant drop in deaths from bacterial diseases. However, the overuse of antibiotics is making bacterial infection harder to treat. As the bacteria mutate, they become more resistant to existing antibiotics, making infections harder to treat. Bacteria transform naturally, but the overuse of antibiotics is speeding up this process. For this reason, scientists and health authorities are calling on doctors not to prescribe antibiotics unless it is necessary, and for people to practice other ways of preventing disease, such as good food hygiene, hand washing, vaccination, and using condoms.

Recent research has led to a new and growing awaress of how the human body interacts with bacteria, and particularly the communities of bacteria living in the intestinal tract, known as the gut microbiome, or gut flora. In , researchers published findings suggesting that women with obesity were more likely to have a particular kind of bacteria, Selenomonas noxia S. They suggest that this may have a psychological impact. Over 2, years ago, a Roman author, Marcus Terentius Varro, suggested that disease may be caused by tiny animals that floated in the air.

He advised people to avoid marshy places during building work because they might contain insects too small for the eye to see that entered the body through the mouth and nostrils and cause diseases. In the 17th century, a Dutch scientist, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek created a single-lens microscope with which he saw what he called animalcules, later known as bacteria. He is considered to be the first microbiologist. In the 19th century, the chemists Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch said that diseases were caused by germs.

This was known as the Germ Theory. In the , the scientist Paul Ehrlich announed the development of the first antibiotic , Salvarsan. He used it to cure syphilis. He was also the first scientist to detect bacteria by using stains. In time, this work is expected to shed new light a wide range of health conditions. If a VM remains in the shutdown state for more than five days after you use the certificate to activate the client on the VM, the certificate becomes invalid.

In this case, you must download a new certificate to reactivate the client. Note We recommend that you create a vCenter Server account that is dedicated for backup. We recommend that you use periods. By default, a random name is used. Migration Plan The migration plan.

Valid values: Right Now and On Schedule. Force silent snapshots If you select this check box, HBR uses quiesced snapshots to migrate data. If quiesced snapshots are unavailable, the backup fails. If you clear this check box, HBR attempts to use quiesced snapshots to migrate data. If quiesced snapshots are unavailable, HBR uses common snapshots to migrate data.

By default, this check box is cleared. Enable Incremental Sync Specifies whether to enable incremental migration. If you enable incremental migration, HBR automatically creates an image to test whether workloads can be switched to the destination.

For more information, see Billing overview. On the Migration Plans tab, you can view the progress of the migration job. If incremental migration is enabled, you can perform the following operations after the migration is complete: Click Sync Tasks in the Actions column of the migration job to view the size of the incremental data that is migrated and the migration status.

In the dialog box that appears, select Verify Migration or Finish Migration. This way, you can check whether the VM runs as expected. You can verify the migration result on a VM up to three times. The verification does not interrupt incremental synchronization.

HBR also stops the migration job. If you select Run an incremental synchronization task before finishing the migration job , HBR migrates data that is generated after the last incremental migration to the created ECS instance. Note If you select Run an incremental synchronization task before finishing the migration job, more time is required to finish the migration job. You are charged for the migration of the VM only the first time you verify the migration or finish the migration job.

If you verify migration or finish a migration job on the same VM again, you are not charged. For more information, see Pricing. One of the most critical requirements for your vSphere Replication implementation is network bandwidth, mainly if you are replicating between two different locations. But also between your virtual environment and your Storage System. The link speed between the sites is very important to have an efficient replication of your VMs.

Depending on the size of your environment, you need to select the size of our vSphere Replication Appliance. By default, the deployment selects large 4 vCPU. If you have a small environment example 3 or 4 hosts and just a few VMs , then the small version works. In this case, since it is a small environment and a test environment, we select the small version.

So choose wisely. Using both is not supported. By default, vSphere Replication Appliance deployment only uses one network interface for all traffic, such as:. In our example, we will not change the default. We can do this to isolate the traffic or balance the traffic. The Italian city of Venice, of course, is the inspiration for the frescoed and gilded ceilings, gold paint, and serenading accordionists in the lobby next to the check-in desk. Chic outdoor pools, renowned performances at the theater, and a large casino, however, are completely Vegas.

Opened in May , the Venetian boasts more than 5, guest rooms, making it one of the biggest resorts in the country.

That doesn't even count its next-door sister, the 3,room Palazzo hotel. The property is divided into two towers -- the Venetian, with 4, rooms; and the quieter 1,room Venezia, built in as an exclusive retreat for high-rolling gamblers. Inside, the ornate Baroque lobby is perpetually filled with the hotel's trademark floral perfume scent.

The Venetian is located on the north end of the Strip, between the Palazzo and Harrah's and across the street from the Mirage. Most Vegas visitors want to explore all of the big hotels, and it's easy to get around on the Strip. Wynn Las Vegas is a minute walk.

Cabs are easy to find at virtually any time of day or night, as are ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft. But a less expensive option is the Deuce, a double-decker bus that runs up and down the strip 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you're traveling with at least one other person, a cab is usually less expensive.

At square feet, the standard rooms at the Venetian are among the largest on the Strip though the rooms at its sister property, the Palazzo , are even larger. Each room contains a bedroom separated by a metal fence from the sunken living room with a sleeper sofa. All adding to the opulence factor: Floor-to-ceiling windows, three flat-screen LCD HDTVs one inch in the living room as well as the bedroom, plus a inch in the bathroom , and massive bathrooms which are a huge square feet that feature deep soaking tubs and upscale bath products.

Minibars, dining tables, bathrobes, and ironing facilities are also provided, but empty mini-fridges must be requested and will incur a charge. If all that space and luxury doesn't quite cut it, further upgrades are available.

The Piazza suite, for example, weighs in at 1, square feet, and has a jetted tub, walk-in closet, and Italian-marble foyer with double doors. The Venetian has 10 pools, including the infamous Tao Beach, a rollicking adult pool area that permits European-style topless sunbathing on specific days. Guests are also welcome to use any of the pools at the Palazzo next door, which are connected via a pedestrian walkway to the Venetian pool decks. At least one pool will stay open during the fall and winter.

On the 10th floor, adjacent to the Venezia tower, is a pretty pool deck with blooming rose bushes, two additional pools, and several small whirlpools. Expect a little more decorum here or at least a bunch of naked statues. An outpost of the world-famous Canyon Ranch Spa offers more than the usual range of spa services.

A day pass buys access to the "Aquavana," which includes the Herbal Laconium a warm, ceramic-tiled room with individual thrones and color-changing ceiling , the Hydro Spa a fancy name for a whirlpool , a Finnish sauna, the Igloo the opposite of a sauna , Experiential Rains a shower with new-agey sounds like "Cool Fog," "Tropical Rain," and "Caribbean Storm" , and other highfalutin features. One warning: The spa, especially the facilities for women, can get crowded. Guests may upgrade to concierge-level rooms, which buys them access to a VIP lounge with free amenities like a continental breakfast, snacks, and early-evening cocktails.

Unlike most Las Vegas hotels, The Venetian offers free parking. Similarly to other Vegas properties, a daily resort fee is charged to rooms, which covers Wi-Fi and access to the fitness center. The Venetian casino boasts endless rows of slots machines, marble floors, frescoed ceilings, and a busy room dedicated to poker. Medium rollers take note, the Venetian doesn't provide comps to gamblers who aren't shelling out the big bucks. That means no free rooms, food or beverages, and no entertainment discounts.

The casino has its own food court, offering an array of pizza places, taco joints, Asian counters, and sandwich shops. The couches in all of the suites pull out into full-size beds. Rollaway beds are available for a fee, but not in standard rooms. Cribs are available at no extra charge. The food court on the casino level, with eateries like Chipotle, Panda Express, Primeburger, and Johnny Rockets, offers plenty of reasonably priced options for kids.

The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The Venetian has made much of how all of its rooms are suites. They are all quite large the standard size is square feet, and they go up from there. Especially if you are here on business, the step down in each room from sleeping area to a small living room, with desk and big flat screen television, makes a huge psychological difference.

All of the suites have been recently refreshed, too, to keep pace with Strip-wide renovations. I've stayed in both a Luxury Suite the standard, with a king-sized bed and a Bella Suite essentially the same layout, slightly larger, with two queens.

All done with cream-colored walls and neutral carpets but with jewel-toned accent chairs, they're more modern and definitely lighter than they were a few years ago. They got us? The Venetian's beds are pillow-top custom mattresses that are really soft and high, and are topped with a big duvet.

The bed can seem a bit How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The mini bars at The Venetian are pretty standard, with electronically sensored refrigerators like most casino hotels. I pulled out a Diet Coke and then realized it was one of the mini bar sized 7. The bathrooms at The Venetian are great: There are separate showers and soaking tubs, the finishes are sleek stone and there are double sinks in the vanity.

My favorite feature is the small makeup table, though, and the mirror whose lighting you can switch to daytime or nighttime.

It's a nice extra feature. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. The inside holds ,, and the outside , It would take you 65 days to fill it with a garden hose, according to The Venetian Las Vegas. Dreaming of a Venetian gondola ride? You're not the only one. Shake things up tonight at Electra Cocktail Club as well-known author, DJ and wellness enthusiast Hannah Bronfman hosts a friendly cocktail competition tonight.

The structure seemed enigmatic until they realized that this system of vascular channels, muscles, and bones appears to be a biological analog of a canonical hydraulic system. Figuring out what fluid was driving the pressurization required expertise from a different field. To identify the origin of the vascular input into the hydraulic system and its connection to the lymphatic system, the team recorded videos of Pacific bluefin and yellowfin tuna swimming in the facilities at the TRCC where close proximity to the fish enabled them to see the subtle changes in angle of attack of the median fins.

The footage allowed the researchers to establish how the tuna changed the area and shape of these fins in order to execute different maneuvers. Paired with computer model simulations, the team also showed how fluid flowed across the tuna, impacting the forces generated by the fin at different swimming speeds. Although lymphatic systems are critical for immune function, lymphatic fluid has previously not been found to be used as a hydraulic fluid in locomotion.

The researchers conducted detailed examinations of the pathways of the vasculature within the fins, studied the microscopic structure of the tissues and tested the cellular makeup of the fluid within this vasculature, which demonstrated it was lymph fluid. Lymphatic vessels are normally small and difficult to distinguish by the naked eye, but in tuna they are transformed into a specialized system of large vessels and channels in median fins. The capacity to rapidly adjust the fin positions affects the lift to drag forces on the fins and prevents the tuna from rolling and yawing during active swimming, limiting energy loss during long migrations.

Tuna have numerous morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to move rapidly through the water column and a sophisticated physiology that includes elevated metabolism, a unique cardiovascular system and a warm body temperature.

They migrate over 6, nautical miles 11, km to the eastern Pacific, eventually returning to their birth waters to spawn. In the first few years of life some young tuna make the extensive migration from Japan to the eastern Pacific off California and Mexico. They reach maturity around five years of age.

Adaptations Tunas are one of the few fishes that are endothermic, which means that they are warm-blooded. But they only maintain warm blood in certain parts of their body, called regional endothermy.

Regional endothermy is achieved through countercurrent heat exchange, which keeps core organs warm, while allowing the temperature in some peripheral organs to go down. The organs they keep warm include the skeletal muscles, eyes, and brain. Maintaining warmer temperatures in these organs enables tunas to maintain higher swimming speed.

Maintaining warm blood also enables them to travel into a wider range of water temperatures, including water that is really cold www. Tunas have skinny bodies that are shaped like a torpedo for efficient movement through the water www. Jennifer Kennedy. Marine Science Expert. Jennifer Kennedy, M.

The writers of these colonies started to create their own works of literature in the English language Greenblatt This was the most dramatic geographic shift of English literature in history Greenblatt The work of these writers hybridized their local traditions with their experiences of their time in the Britsh Empire Greenblatt Naipul, and J. Huntington, Samuel. This article focuses on the extent to which imperialism contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. The first part describes the emergence of specific imperialist cultures and attitudes in Europe.

The second part deals with economic rivalries, showing that financial imperialism was not identical with formal political expansion. Even if imperialism was one of the crucial factors that led to the Great War, by nearly all colonial disputes between Germany and Britain had been solved. Most textbooks agree that the imperialist tensions in the two decades before contributed to the diplomatic constellation of the July Crisis.

However, the extent to which European imperialism was responsible for the outbreak of World War I is both an open and a controversial question. In broaching this issue, this article aims not to give an overview of the history of imperialism and colonialism , but rather to focus on the aspects that might have worsened the relations between the Great Powers and have led to the Great War.

The article distinguishes between several levels of analysis. The first part deals with European imperialist cultures and attitudes before the First World War; the second part takes a deeper look at economic and financial imperialism, focusing on Anglo-German relations, which were crucial in the pre-war era; and the third part analyzes the diplomacy of the European Great Powers with reference to imperialist concepts and ideas.

European expansion started in the early modern period, but most historians agree that at the end of the 19 th century new forms of imperialism appeared. Between the early s and the map of the world was redrawn, especially in Africa. With the founding of Germany and Italy , two rather aggressive and aspiring new powers appeared on the scene. After the turn of the century, two non-European states — Japan and the United States — also became imperial powers. After its victory in the Spanish-American War, the United States conquered a colonial empire of its own in East Asia the Philippines , occupied Hawaii, and established an informal zone of influence in the Caribbean.

The enormous progress in communications railways, trans-oceanic telegraph lines, steamships , the second industrial revolution steel, electricity, energy, chemistry , and technical progress in weapon technologies modern artillery , Maxim-guns or machine guns had enabled Europeans and North Americans to occupy and control territories and states which were either unknown the African interior or even perceived to be culturally superior like China some decades before the First World War.

The reasons for the acceleration of European expansion in the second half of the 19 th century are still subjects of controversial debates, but this topic calls for a separate analysis. The technical progress after the s led to the appearance of new attitudes in several European countries, while important social groups demanded more aggressive expansion outside of Europe. With the exception of the Russians, ruling liberal and conservative elites were increasingly influenced by vague forms of Social Darwinism.

Many statesmen before were convinced that the concept of the struggle for existence was also valid in foreign policy. Empires and nation states were seen as entities that could rise and fall. According to the principle of Social Darwinism, only the strongest states would survive.

Colonial expansion was therefore viewed as a precondition for gaining access to necessary resources. However, the concept often had racist overtones, especially if non-white or non-European civilizations were competing with the European imperial powers.

This fact might explain the popularity of the concept: imperialists and nationalists from rather different political camps could agree on the need for expansion. In most of the imperial powers Britain, France, Germany, and Italy , elites with different backgrounds were convinced that only expanding countries with colonies or informal spheres of influence would be able to survive in the future.

It was taken for granted that hierarchies of civilizations existed, with the industrialized European countries and the United States at the top.

In during the Boxer Rebellion in China all imperial competition was suspended. Faced with an extra-European enemy the imperial powers united in an unprecedented fashion and dispatched an army that suppressed the rebellion. The Social Darwinist cultures of imperialism were rooted in different national and social traditions.

Pro-colonial movements used a variety of arguments to promote national expansion. Colonies were regarded as necessary because they offered access to raw materials and could serve as outlets for domestic industries, arguments that were used especially in times of economic crises.

Other motivations for expanding overseas-empires were based on more traditional forms of nationalism : colonies were seen as objects of national prestige.

Especially in the Italian and German cases, historians have debated the significance of social imperialism, the idea that imperial expansion served as a means to calm domestic and social problems and to unify the nation. Before the s the British Empire was mainly based on trade. British economic elites had developed an outlook that has been described as gentlemanly capitalism. It was the conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who successfully embraced social imperialist arguments.

In his famous speech in the Crystal Palace on 24 June , Disraeli celebrated the British Empire as a source of prestige and defended it against critics. He accused the Liberals of undermining the empire by thinking purely in financial and material terms and by forgetting about issues such as greatness, pride, and respect for the world. In many cases, Christian missionaries also supported imperialist ideas and colonial expansion. In general the missionaries were Janus-faced.

On the one hand, they preached the gospel and tried to protect the indigenous populations from cruelties committed by colonial authorities and conquerors. Many scandals about the suppression, mistreatment or massacre of native populations in the colonies became publicized in Europe because missionaries used their contacts in the press and with individual members of parliaments.

On the other hand, missions and missionaries often welcomed colonial occupation, since the protection by colonial military authorities was the only way to reach unknown and often dangerous regions in the African interior, such as the Congo. In some cases this was purely cynical colonial propaganda, but this concept also served as a powerful ideological framework to proclaim not only European technical and military superiority, but also cultural superiority.

It was the destiny of the white races to lift up mankind and to bring the lights of civilization even to the darkest places of the world. Public opinion created a pro-imperialist mood that contributed to the worsening of relations among the Great Powers before Strong and effective colonial pressure groups pushed for colonial and informal imperialist expansion. Some examples show how governments, both those democratically elected and not, lost any room for diplomatic maneuvering because of public opposition to certain beliefs.

The important role of pro-colonial pressure groups can already be seen in the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty of From the German perspective, this Anglo-German agreement was a success; Germany acquired the island of Heligoland, which was of enormous strategic importance, in exchange for the African island of Zanzibar, which it hardly controlled.

However, this treaty caused public protest in Germany and led to the foundation of the Pan-German League Alldeutscher Verband , which later became a small but very influential pro-colonial and hyper-nationalist pressure group. The Pan-Germans played both a destructive and a decisive role in domestic politics. Many members came from the intellectual bourgeoisie and from right wing liberal elites: many professors, teachers, intellectuals and journalists joined the league or sympathized with it.

After the turn of the century the Pan-Germans took over anti-Semitic and hyper-nationalist arguments and became a kind of intellectual clearing center for racist, imperialist, and nationalist ideas.

Today, historians agree that the famous Kruger telegram, sent by Wilhelm II, German Emperor to the president of the Republic of South Africa after the failure of the British Jameson raid in , was a severe diplomatic mistake. The German emperor surrendered his neutrality and symbolically joined the Boers against British South Africa when it was not necessary.

However, the German public welcomed this step. Likewise, several strong anti-British propaganda campaigns created popular support for the freedom-fight of the Boers among the German public, using anti-British propaganda and comparing the struggle to that between David and Goliath. At the same time, neither the German nor the British government was interested in worsening bilateral diplomatic relations because of the Boer question.

However, both governments were facing enormous difficulties trying to calm the press in their respective countries. Comparable problems appeared repeatedly in the decade before Although the British government favored a compromise solution, British support for the railway in the Ottoman Empire became impossible due to the public outcry against it. Arguments against British participation were soon adopted by several members of Parliament.

George Ernest Morrison , correspondent of The Times in Beijing, initiated anti-German press campaigns and even demanded a preventive war against Germany in because of informal German imperialism in China. He was convinced that a major European war with Germany as a main aggressor was bound to occur, no matter what the British government did to appease Berlin. In Italy, beginning in the s public opinion also contributed to the creation of a pro-imperialist and expansionist mood.

The Liberal Party had thus far been unable to form a homogenous nation state, although the unification of the country had already started in the s. The creation of an Italian empire in Africa seemed to be a means both of distracting critics at home from discussing domestic problems and of creating a unifying feeling.

However, this failed when the Italian colonial army suffered a disastrous and humiliating defeat by the independent state of Ethiopia in According to Paul Kennedy, economic imperialism and the Anglo-German trade rivalry were crucial factors leading to the emergence of the Anglo-German antagonism, which contributed to the outbreak of World War I.

One has to distinguish between the objective figures on the one hand and the perceived situation on the other. In relative terms, in the two decades before one can talk about a British decline and a German rise in export economies.

For British Social Darwinists and nationalists, this development was identical to decline. However, this view did not capture the reality of economic developments.

Germany remained an important market for British goods and vice versa. In Germany was in fact the second biggest market for British exports and re-exports. Especially in imperial affairs, German and British traders and bankers often cooperated quite successfully; at the same time, German banks had to compete with other German firms, while British banks had to deal with British competition.

Unlike the British or French colonies, economically the German colonial empire was not important for the mother country. It was also of little significance for the rising tensions between the European Great Powers prior to the First World War. In Neo-Rankean terminology, used both by contemporary diplomats and by diplomatic historians, states acted as subjects and consequently the economy was nationalized. However, economic imperialism followed its own rules, which in some cases fit with the respective national political interests but did not necessarily have to.

The intricate diplomatic and political problems caused by economic expansion are illustrated by the example of the famous Baghdad Railway project. Since the late s German banks, especially the Deutsche Bank, had been active in Turkish affairs and in financing several Turkish railway enterprises.

At the turn of the century the position of German firms was so strong that one can refer to certain regions of Turkey as parts of a German economic informal empire.

The government of the Ottoman Empire tried to persuade the German bankers to extend the already existing railway lines to Baghdad and the Persian Gulf, mainly for strategic reasons. However, as mentioned above, in these ideas met with British resistance, as this line would have been the fastest route to India and would have been controlled by German firms. Before financial imperialism very often remained multinational despite governmental attempts to nationalize it.

Banks viewed these projects as commercial opportunities and were unconcerned with national prestige. Governments acted within the frame of the nation state or empire and often tried to further national expansion.

Multinational firms and banks, however, were confronted with the challenge of economic globalization and had to act internationally if they wanted to expand overseas. Until London remained the financial clearing center of the world and the London stock exchange was the most important place for all kinds of transactions.

The gold standard guaranteed stable exchange rates, and internationally the pound sterling was the most accepted currency for bills of exchange. In private a banker or trader could have been a hardcore nationalist, but if he wanted to earn money he had to act internationally. In a couple of cases economic investments could spur imperial conflicts.

Governments could claim to protect or defend investments that were threatened by an indigenous state or an imperial competitor. Examples include the bankruptcies of Egypt and the Ottoman Empire and the Venezuelan debt crisis, which started at the end of the 19 th century. For European firms this classical form of financial imperialism was much more effective than direct rule.

During the s and s in Egypt, several disputes between the French and the British caused tensions. For the British, the German support was crucial. After internal uprisings and civil war, the Venezuelan government was unable to pay back its foreign debts. A British-German-Italian naval blockade escalated as German cruisers provoked skirmishes.

These military events alarmed the United States, which feared that the Monroe Doctrine would be violated. However, even if informal and financial imperialism contributed to the worsening of relations between certain states during this first wave of globalization between the s and , during this period close economic ties and global financial networks were also created.

They were convinced that countries would not risk destroying the global economic system. They strongly believed that the destruction of the close connections in finance and trade, which would be the result of a great war among the European powers, would lead to a global economic disaster.

As World War I showed, this opinion was correct. Between and the British government tried to improve Anglo-German relations through economic imperialism. After the failure of the famous Haldane Mission in , British statesmen looked for objectives outside of Europe for which there could be compromise solutions with Germany. The extremely difficult negotiations for the Baghdad Railway were successfully finished in the spring of Additionally, in the treaty partitioning the Portuguese colonies , the British accepted huge German colonial acquisitions in Africa at the expense its traditional ally, Portugal.

In the same year German banks and firms created economic zones of interest using railway projects and chartered companies in southern Angola and in the north of Mozambique. By the summer of , economically the two regions were firmly in the hands of the Germans and could have been annexed under the pretext of a violation of German interests by Portuguese authorities. This example shows that both Africa and smaller European states like Portugal were simply pawns for the European Great Powers.

At the same time, economic imperialism could be used as a means to defuse political tensions. Even if in some cases a strong British-German trade rivalry existed, the reaction of leading bankers and economists interested in imperial projects showed that they were not interested in going to war with one another.

Karl Helfferich — was one of the most nationalist German bankers and as a director of the Deutsche Bank was responsible for the Baghdad Railway. I suppose Germany, our best customer, will be beaten. And what then?

The third part of this article deals with diplomacy and imperialism. This term remains popular but is misleading. The European orchestra played without a conductor and without clearly accepted rules of international law. If there was anything like a system it was organized and held together by the governments of the Great Powers, which followed their own interests and jealously prevented other states from becoming too strong or reaching a hegemonic position.

Since the end of the Napoleonic Wars, disputes over colonial or imperial issues had not escalated to the point where peace in Europe was threatened.

This was in large part because conflicts did not touch on interests that the European powers regarded as vital. A few exceptions, such as the Fashoda Crisis of , which nearly led to war between France and Britain, and the Second Moroccan Crisis , which will be discussed later, prove the rule. However, disputes at the so-called periphery could strongly influence the competition between the Great Powers in Europe and could lead them to redefine their interests in Europe.

The reasons for the acceleration of European expansion during the s are still being debated, but this article concentrates on the diplomatic processes and consequences of imperial expansion.

This surprising step led to serious tensions with Italy, which was also interested in this territory. The French annexation had direct repercussions for the European system; fearing further French aggressions, the Italian government joined the German-Austrian-Hungarian military defensive alliance.

In the next year, following nationalist uprisings, the British navy attacked Alexandria. The Suez Canal was the shortest route between Europe and India, and the British government regarded control as vital. Although Egypt formally remained a part of the Ottoman Empire, the British consul-general Evelyn Baring, Earl of Cromer exercised the real power and British officials occupied key positions in the government.

Nearly all the Great Powers with the exception of Austria-Hungary and Russia and even one smaller European country Belgium , were interested in acquiring territories in Africa. However, their governments quickly recognized that the scramble for Africa could have undesired diplomatic repercussions in Europe. Indeed, before the turn of the century no imperialist crisis occurred that led to serious or lasting tensions between London and Berlin.

By Kissinger Diktat Bismarck had formulated the basic ideas for his foreign policy. He believed it was necessary to promote and support the aggressive tendencies among the European Great Powers, but that these tendencies should be directed towards the periphery. Consequently, at the beginning of the s German diplomats encouraged the French government to expand in Africa, hoping for conflicts between the French, Italians, and British.

In the West Africa Conference took place in Berlin. Its aim was to keep conflicts arising from the scramble for Africa under the control of the Great Powers. During this conference the participants set up certain rules for future expansion. The concept of effective control was introduced. This meant that it was no longer enough simply to plant a flag somewhere in the African soil; rather, visible institutions such as police stations, trading posts, or missions had to be established.

The result was an enormous acceleration of European colonial expansion and sub-imperialism. Even territories that were of no use for European states were quickly occupied because of the fear that they would be taken by another country.

The Congo Basin became a zone of free trade under the protection of Leopold II, King of the Belgians , who established one of the most brutal and repressive colonial regimes ever seen in Africa.

When Leo von Caprivi became Chancellor in , the Berlin government returned to a strictly anti-imperialist policy. A precise and concise analysis of German trade relations and capital investments worldwide showed that Germany was already an export-oriented nation and that German strength would grow even if exports were promoted by an active foreign policy. Consequently, Caprivi initiated a policy of free trade. Treaties including the most-favored-nation clause were signed with a growing number of countries.

Pickett Street Alexandria, Virginia It's almost as though I had to try all these other avenues before I arrived here, to know that they don't work. The rock guitarist — of Jane's Addiction , and formerly the Red Hot Chili Peppers — is waxing lyrical about the practice of body suspension.

Closely linked with the greater world of body modification, suspension is a practice in which an individual's skin is pierced with large sterilised metal hooks, from which they are then hung. Used in ancient cultures for millennia, the modern form has been redefined by people such as Fakir Musafar, Stelarc, and Allen Falkner , who describes it as "cathartic". Clearly, there are risks. He highlights a number of possible risks, including infection, nerve and tendon damage due to improper hook placement, and the appearance of suspension shock syndrome if an individual suspends vertically for too long.

However, Scott DeBoer, a Chicago-based emergency medical technician and register nurse, insists it is safe. There are many different ways to suspend. Once you're in the air for, like, 30 or 40 seconds, that burn fades away. And then you get hit with the euphoria. You still feel the pressure, but at that point in time, you're elsewhere. Karras, a young woman with pink hair, came to New York City from outside Amherst, Massachusetts, to be suspended for the first time by Coichetti.

She was excited, and her boyfriend had come with her for his first suspension, too. Karras has been involved in the body modification scene for about five years, and has been helping out with suspensions and heavier body modifications, mostly types of cosmetic implants, for the last two. I just have to. I asked her what types of suspension she was interested in trying.

Gotta let my body heal up between, but eventually I want to try as many different and new things as we can think of. Tearing of the skin can, and does, happen, but it's almost never the sort of dramatic freefall that someone watching a suspension for the first time might imagine. There are certain parts of the body, like the knees and the chest, where tearing is more likely to occur.

Tearing happens slowly, and there is more than enough time, Coichetti said, to get the suspended person down on the ground before there is any serious injury. Skilled suspension artists can tell when the skin is beginning to tear, and will inform the suspended person what is going on. It's not an issue right now, but in about a minute or two it's going to get to the point where you need a stitch or two.

Are you comfortable with that? They don't have a choice. But if you're suspending and you're at this moment, most people go, 'Leave me up here, suture me later. You can find examples of suspensions gone wrong on the Internet. At a certain point, skin gives out, as King said. In most cases when a suspended person falls, though, the fall isn't due to the skin actually ripping. Improper insertion of the hooks, in conjunction with a high degree of motion, can result in the hooks sliding out.

Professionals who are attempting suspensions at great heights or suspensions that involve a good deal of motion will rig up a safety harness that acts as a failsafe should the hooks come out for some reason. One video on Hook Life, a blog that caters to the suspension community, shows a Russian suspension team suspending a man in an abandoned warehouse. The man freefalls from a great height, then swings back and forth. He is harnessed in.

Hook Life, though, added a lengthy disclaimer before posting the video, warning readers, essentially, not to try this at home. Coichetti's biggest concern about suspension is that people will try to imitate what they see on the Internet without the proper medical and technical knowledge required to perform a safe suspension.

Both King and Goldberg considered infection to be the greatest risk during suspension, but knowledgeable suspension artists use sterilized hooks, needles, and gauze when suspending someone to minimize the risk. Some scarring is inevitable, but when Coichetti showed me a point on his leg where he had suspended seven times, I wouldn't have noticed anything if it weren't for a white spot in a tattoo, evidence of where hooks had been. There is, as King suggested, a high level of physics and medical knowledge being put to use during a suspension, and Coichetti says safety is his number one priority.

He is a certified first responder, meaning he is trained in providing pre-hospital care for medical emergencies, and a volunteer fire fighter. Most of his team are certified in first aid care, and two of the suspension artists in the Rites of Passage Boston chapter are paramedics. If someone has a medical condition that would complicate a suspension, he consults the person's doctor to clear him or her for suspension. He has turned some people looking to suspend away due to the medical risks that a condition presents.

Shock can be life threatening, but, I mean, you break your leg, you go into shock. Shock is on a spectrum," he made a wide space with his two hands, "we're just fucking around in this range," he said, using two fingers to indicate the very low end. And, he says, if something ever were to go wrong, the first thing he would do would be to call an ambulance. That feeling of shock is what many who suspend are looking for -- the rush of endorphins, serotonin, and other chemicals that results in a sort of high.

Some see it as a spiritual experience. Others find it exhilarating, and laugh while they are suspended.
