Jw 4 whyte

Thread starter walkbythesea Start date Jun 10, So a casual late night eBay search on Saturday lead me down an unexpected path to a piece of treasure. For a long time I'm fancied a PRST4 and have chased a few and it not worked out, then this weekend I came across a JW4 with a story that intrigued me enough to take a punt and just buy it - when I went to collect it I discovered that to all intents and purposes the bike was over 14 years old and basically brand new!

It was bought new, ridden for a London to Brighton, ridden couple of other times and put in the garage and forgotten about, pulled out a coupe of weeks ago and then due to fitness the owner decided to buy an e-bike instead! As far as I can tell it's probably not been ridden more than a handful of times and has less than 75 miles on it - it's absolutely minty fresh and showroom shiny!

I am absolutely delighted, after all these years of wanting one so long after production I've managed to buy a "new" one. JPG Duxuk Retro Guru. Lucky man! It's a tragedy that the concept didn't carry on. My JW4 had a saddle unlike any other I've seen.

Your stem looks the same but I'm not sure about the saddle itself. My saddle had a plastic strip about half an inch wide underneath which the stem clamped on to.

In over six years I never had to touch it! Those grips are shockingly offensive. My bike wasn't supplied with pedals so I think you can use what you like from the period and still be authentic. It seemed perfect then but now seems a little lacking.

It may seem stiff but if you allow anything more than a tiny amount of sag the anti bob system doesn't work, especially at the front. With these pressures set I still get full compression on big hits. Here's my current JW4. In which case maybe the saddle IS original on mine, I had to do a little research - it's an SDG I-beam which I would describe as being exactly the same as yours, I've never seen anything like it before either but it works really well! Maybe he just had the shop change the colour then as I can't imagine the urban camo look was standard?

What colour was yours? Gold Trader. Feedback View. Re: Funky bikes in a 'makes your eyes bleed' kind of way! Re: Re: brocklanders":2m5v38in said:. What's the difference between the models? Click to expand Sweet, thanks for the info! I honestly can't remember what my saddle looked like, only that it had that groovy way of fixing. I'd guess yours is original. They make a 9mm axle stiff like a through axle before such things were available. The JWs are a quick release like any other bike of the time.

You get the box section fork on the PRST. The "2"s had a Marin like single pivot and the "4"s had the virtual pivot point, which was way ahead of its time. The earlier ones often had a coil over front shock which you need to give loads of preload to make the anti bob work.

I love the look of them. They're an engineers MTB rather than a cycling enthusiasts idea. The early saddles were like sitting on a lightly padded girder sprung rails acted like a spring, who would have guessed, replacing it with an i-beam was, um, like sitting on a girder By the time they'd sorted that, everyone had given up on them. Weren't particularly light either from what i can remember. In theory, could you create a more peda l efficient front end with linkages and such?

I'm confused. Does the front shock act like a DC fork, thereby limiting your turning radius? I wouldn't like that much for XC applications Don't know the term I'm afraid. The linkage is designed to maintain a constant head angle through compression, and it also has a j-shaped path so the wheel moves backwards slightly at the beginning of the stroke - great for going up kerbs or hitting logs. All the pivot bearings have a lifetime warranty too, which is nice considering how many of them there are!

What bushing maintenance will I have to do? I'm not sure TBH. I think it has at least 60 degrees each side thou, should be alright So I ordered the frame and it has to be stripped down to send to me. Any reccommendations for parts I should ask them to leave on? Ideally I'd run a totally Shimanoless bike if I can manage it SkaredShtles said:. Every time a bushing goes out you're stuck with no ridey.

Those are bearings, aren't they? I haven't a clue - do you mean the pivot points? Are you hitting on me? Paid for it last friday, they were supposed to have stripped and shipped it by tuesday to arrive yesterday.

They only got round to bloody sending it today, which means it'll probably be next tuesday before I get it I was hoping to have it built by this weekend!

Incidentally, anybody know what sort of front derailleur I would need? Top swing, conventional, bb mount? Apr 23, 5, 0 Sand, CA.

Any opinions on the planned kitout? Have I forgotten anything? Constructive criticism greatly appreciated. Oct 26, 10, chez moi. By the looks of the picture, you'll need some biiig headset spacers, too How exactly IS the headset configured? I assume it's integral to the frame, along with the steer tube??

Haven't the foggiest, as the buggers have yet to deliver By the looks of the picture it's integral, although when I rang the shop they said that they would include the headset, implying it can be taken off. Unless that's just general shop BS, of course. Nice kit I'd suggest going with some Crank Brothers eggbeater pedals if you don't mind stepping away from SPD-type pedals.

Can you get them across the pond for a reasonable price? If not, Look makes a pair of eggbeater lookalikes Once I get used to them, I can possibly shove the platform SPDs on my hardtail and get eggbeaters, just so's I have one bike I can ride in flat shoes.

Just noticed them, and I'm thinking they look pretty nice. Also got a pair of PC99 chains on eBay, that's my whole kitout now I think. Ooh, thanks for that! Could have been annoying Yay, my order has been dispatched from CRC - pedals, cassette, derailleur all winging their way to me Now all I am waiting on are the chains I got on eBay, and the damn frame itself!

Should all arrive tomorrow or wednesday, and the shop will hopefully have the rest of the kit needed. Just in time for a ride through our local forest on wednesday night. I want pics when you get it. Oh hell yes. I'll be gloating about it for ages Gonna get me some very strange looks riding about, o'course. Love it! Derailleur, pedals and cassette coming from ChainReactionCycles - posted yesterday class, I'm hoping they'll arrive tomorrow. Everything else I'm getting from the shop, so I'll be heading up there by noon and hoping it gets built by 5.
